Effective Equilibrium Reaction Zone Modeling of Hydrogen Plasma Smelting Reduction: A Scenario Analysis

This work develops a dynamic model for hydrogen plasma smelting reduction (HPSR) in direct current arc furnaces, implemented with a zonal approach to simulate industrial operations. The model couples thermodynamic principles with grouped mass-transfer parameters to predict the time evolution of mass, temperature, and composition in the metal, slag, and off-gas across furnace zones. Calibration is performed against published experimental data to accurately capture key mass-transfer dynamics.

Metix’ Open Bath Furnace (OBF) is a Breakthrough in Green Ironmaking – Converting Low-grade Direct-reduced Iron (DRI) into Hot Metal and Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) with Unmatched Efficiency, Flexibility, and a Versatile Furnace Design.

OBF technology is undergoing an innovative adaptation: it is being developed to melt DRI for the production of liquid iron, which can subsequently be processed into liquid steel via BOF steelmaking. This paper focuses on the OBF technology jointly developed by METIX and the SMS group, combining extensive industry experience with cutting-edge engineering solutions.

Slag Valorisation Furnace (SVF) Technology by Metix: Metallurgical Conversion of Steelmaking Slag into Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) and Recovering of the Metal Units

Slag valorisation involves the metallurgical transformation of slag to achieve desired properties and convert it into a valuable product. This approach not only enhances economic benefits but also minimises environmental impact across the steel production and cement manufacturing value chain.

Sustainable Smelter Modernization: Engineering a Brownfield Solution for a Matte Settling Electric Furnace (MSEF) Replacement

The Freeport Miami Smelter Sustainability Project addresses the replacement of the existing Matte Settling Electric Furnace (MSEF) at the Freeport-McMoRan Inc. Miami Smelter in Miami, Arizona, utilizing innovative brownfield and building information modeling approaches. This chapter explores the engineering challenges encountered when integrating the MSEF into the existing electric furnace building.
